Tips for saving money or not...

In today’s worldwide financial crises it can be a bit difficult with money. Being pregnant, creating a nursery and buying the baby’s first clothes and necessities can be very expensive.

I compare it to my wedding when everyone added on another 100% margin. Hairdresser, florist, venue and more, all took the opportunity to squeeze a bit extra when they knew it was for the BIG day.

It is a bit the same now. The stores tell you that you need this and you certainly need that. I am obviously new to all this and don’t really know what I need or don’t need. Do I need a change table, bath, and breast pump? Will I even be able to breast feed? Do I need odour free nappy bin, room thermometer, air mist thing, pack of 100 bibs, 1000 wonder suites, singlets, bunny rugs, and God knows how much more. Who wouldn’t get confused? (There should be a website called confused.com.au for first time mothers too – see, there is a new business idea for me)

I don’t think you need to spend a fortune on all of these things so here are my tips;

1. Think about if you really need what you are looking to buy. Can you buy it later when you know for example that you can breast feed?
2. Second hand clothes are perfect. Most of my clothe collection is second hand clothes from my friends Annika and Ebony. I even got a few things from when Annika was a baby and I think that is extra special
3. You can find bargains online. Search around and compare different shops. On my website Compare-Online I try to find individual shops that offer great clothes, furniture and toys for kids. Check it out here
www.compare-online.com.au
4. You can also find good quality second hand clothes etc at The Baby & Kids market across Australia, find their website here www.compare-online.com.au/Pregnancy_baby
5. ALDI’s nappies are suppose to be brilliant and a lot cheaper than Huggies – I have to trust my mother friends on this because I obviously don’t know yet

Let me know if you have more tips!

But then of course, it is also fun and special to buy your baby a new first outfit, cot, pram etc. I think it is part of getting ready and you need to allow yourself to buy new and beautiful things too.

God knows I've gone against every single advice above. I have bought my baby’s first jumpsuit, a little hat that looks like a strawberry, a fun cradle thing that goes with my new painted nursery, books and lots of soft toys. I have bought a few Swedish outfits, books and prints for the walls. I have also got some absolute gorgeous things from my family and friends.

Craig smiled and hugged me last week when I came home with a pack of newborn Huggies and had to open the pack to see how small they were and to put them in their allocated draw in my own made change table. They were on special, I said. I saved a whole $!

As you know Craig is building the cot, which I can guarantee is not the cheapest way to get a cot, but extremely special!!! For a cheap cot I would go to IKEA (there you go some quality Swedish for you)

I can’t stress enough how many gorgeous things you can find online. Ok not always cheaper but they are so cute and different. If I had the money I would go nuts. Find some of my favourite shops on my website Compare-Online.com.au

Conclusion: Follow you heart. Whatever makes you happy makes your baby happy!

Happy shopping!
